Project proposal
Title:  Developing PPV-resistant fruit trees.

Type Details: The goal of the project is to obtain the transgenic plum pox virus (PPV) resistant sour cherry and plum trees. The PPV coat protein gene isolated in our institute will be introduced in these species in plant expression vectors. To increase our chances to obtain resistance to the virus, the sense, double-sense and RNAi constructs will be assembled and introduced in plants. The transgenic plants will then be tested for transgene expression and for the PPV resistance. In our institute, we have transformed chrysantemums with the coat protein gene of the virus B of chrysantemums in sense and anti-sense orientations and the transgenic plants are now being analysed. We also have transformed sour cherry with a reporter gene and are working on the plum transformation.

Details:  The institute was founded in 1974 as the Institute of Applied Molecular Biology and Genetics, renamed afterwards to All-Russian Research Intitute of Agricultural Biotechnology. ARRIAB is engaged in research on genetic engineering of plants, animals, and viruses; cell technology and chromosomal engineering for plants; chemical regulation of plant ontogenesys and microbial synthesis of plant growth regulators; molecular and immunological diagnostics of plant and animal diseases. In recent years the ARRIAB staff members have been granted 103 Author's Certificates, five USA patents, and nine German patents. The total number of scientific workers and technicians are now about 180 and 110, respectively, among them 22 with Dr.Sci. and 74 with Ph.D. degrees. The Scientific Council of the Institute (eleven Dr.Sci. and seven Ph.D.) coordinates the lines of basic and applied research. Under the auspices of the High Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation, Institute has a board for granting Dr.Sci. and Ph.D. degrees in biotechnology and molecular biology. The Institute maintains widespread international relation. Many projects are carried out in collaboration with universities and laboratories of France, Germany, Japan, USA and other countries.
