GENERAL CONCLUSION

The International Conference of Young Scientists «BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR FUTURE» was held on June 6-8, 2006 in St.-Petersburg. It was affiliated to the 3rd International Symposium «EU-Russia: Prospects for Cooperation in Biotechnology in the Seventh Framework Programme». Printable version of the programme >>>
60 young scientists arrived from 10 Russian regions (Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Moscow and Moscow district, Novosibirsk, Perm, Saratov, St.-Petersburg, Ufa, Vladivostok, Voronezh), NIS and European countries (Germany, Ukraine, Belarus and Armenia) to take part in the Conference. Among participants, there were young scientists and lecturers with a Ph.D. degree (thirty persons), post-graduate students, junior researchers and students.

Leading European scientists (32 lecturers) attended the Conference and the Symposium. They presented activities of international consortia participating in research projects of the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Community (FP6) and discussed Technological Platforms for the implementation of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7, 2007-2012). The programme included plenary and section reports, panel discussions, poster sessions and seminars. Plenary lectures were dedicated to general issues, in particular outlining current state of Russian biotechnology. Priority areas for the application of biotechnological approaches in the XXI century were characterized from the viewpoint of the EC-Russia cooperation in the frame of FP6 and FP7 in the field of food, agriculture and biotechnology. Four sections of the Conference were focused on the actual problems in the specific areas of biotechnology.

The plenary session of the Conference of Young Scientists (moderators: Dr. Francesco Lescai and Prof. Vasiliy Popov) included discussion of the common trends in the development of international contacts between young scientists and reports of young scientists about the results of their investigations.

      Dr. Anna V. Khodorenko - Immunocytochemical analysis of specific molecular components organisation of extracellular symbiotic compartments provided interaction between symbiotic partners during development of root nodules of pea (Pisum sativum l.)
      Igor Ermakov - Contamination and remediation of forest soils in surroundings of a nickel smelter
      Dr. Yulia Burtseva - Highly efficient immobilization of laminarinases from marine mollusks in novel hybrid polysaccharide-silica nanocomposites
      Dr. Vera Sadykova - Development of new forms of biopreparations with Trichoderma strains on wooden compounds
      Dr. Nataiya Malikova - Calcium-regulated photoproteins and their “color” mutants as bioluminescent reporters
      Dr. Moritz Frommberger - An Analytical Platform for Environmental, Plant and Microbial Metabolomics Based on Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry (FTMS)

At the poster session the participants presented their studies covering all directions of the Conference’s activity: biotechnology of plants, forestry and environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology; food safety and animals’ health.

The Conference participants visited the All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Microbiology, met with the Director of the Institute, academician Igor Tikhonovich, became acquainted with activities of the laboratories, new innovative technologies and implementation of the research results into practice.

Young Scientists Conference «Biotechnology for Future», aims to give young scientists an opportunity
— to share knowledge and experiences between researchers and science facilitators in the fields affiliated to Thematic Priority 5 of FP7 - Biotechnology, Agriculture and Food in view of enhanced EU-Russia cooperative research
— to encourage and facilitate mobility and direct contact between the young scientists to enable them to exchange ideas, knowledge and information building international connections.

Poster competition will be held during the Conference of Young Scientist. The winners of the poster competition will be nominated by the evaluation committee and get additional appraisal thanks to the monetary awards!

Young scientists will visit leading Russian Centers of excellence in the field of Biotechnology (St.Petersburg)!

The winners of the competition will receive funding for their business trips for participation in the International School-Conference of Young Scientists and the International Symposium “EU-Russia: Prospects for Cooperation in Biotechnology in the Seventh Framework Programme”.

They will be informed about rules of this travel funding in individual order via e-mail not later that May 12.

The Participants from Saint-Petersburg and Pushkin will be registered directly during the School-Conference without travel funding.

CONTEST
for the best scientific&research work among young scientists

Proposals may be submitted by graduate students (MSc, PhD) and young scientists carrying out research in the field of Biotechnology. The emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence, creativity and potential as selection criteria. The winners will receive award. The award is meant to cover all of the costs of travel and subsistence for participation in the Symposium and Conference.

TERMS OF THE PARTICIPATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF YOUNG SCIENTIST “BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR FUTURE”

1. Young scientists including students (MSc, PhD) and young scientists under the age of 35 involved in biotechnology researches are invited.
2. An Applicant can send only one abstract.
3. An Applicant is preferred to be a single author of the abstract. The Applicant’s Supervisor can be a co-author only if the Applicant is a student (MSc, PhD) at present. Abstract submitted by joint authors can be accepted only as an exception due to scientific excellence, creativity and potential of scientific&research work. In any case, the Applicant should be the first author of the abstract in the authors’ list.
4. If an Applicant is a student (MSc, PhD), he or she should also send a Recommendation Letter (a letter of evaluation) signed by the Applicant’s Scientific Supervisor.
5. Applicants should send not later than April, 25, 2006 the following set of the documents:
- Application form;
- Abstract of 4 pages maximum (including figures and tables);
- Proof of the Applicant’s age and institutional position signed by the Applicant’s Scientific Supervisor or Institutional Representative.

ABSTRACT PREPARATION GUIDELINE

Please prepare your abstract according to this page.
The abstract should be 4 pages maximum (including figures and tables).
The file name of the abstract should be the name of the author (example: smirnov.doc).
The abstract must contain the following:
— title in bold capitals;
— authors’ names in lower case letters with numbers in superscript indicating author’s affiliation (if authors belong to different institutions); the Applicant’s name must be underlined;
— organization’s name and postal address and e-mail (italic capitals, left alignments);
— keywords (at least three, left alignment);
— text not more than 4 pages including figures and tables (justified alignment);
— page size: А4 (210 x 297 mm);
— text should be typed 1.5 spaced; margins should be of 3 cm;
— text should be typed in Тimes New Roman 12 pt

ORDER OF CONSIDERATION

1. After submission, applicants will receive a confirmation of receipt. After deadline for abstracts submission (April 17 2006) the Special Committee will evaluate papers.

2. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to accept or reject papers, and to assign them to oral or poster presentations. After the review process you will be informed about acceptance and presentation mode.

3. The Catalog of Applicants will be presented on web site of the 3rd International Symposium “EU-Russia: Prospects for Cooperation in Biotechnology in the Seventh Framework Programme”
http://www.fp6-food.ru/symposium-2006/index.html. As result of that selection, 50 winners will be revealed. They will be rewarded with Attendance Grants for financial covering of all expenses connected with their business trips (5-8 June 2006) for participation in the Conference and Symposium.

4. The results of the Contest will be presented on web site of the 3rd International Symposium “EU-Russia: Prospects for Cooperation in Biotechnology in the Seventh Framework Programme”
